Our first league encounter against our old friends from Erdington & Saltley at Hawksmill Sports was eagerly awaited by the squad and, as was anticipated, proved to be a stern test.
Coventry took the game to Erdington early on and had the lions share of the first half.
We played some bright football, at times putting together some decent passages of play.
The shape of the team in this period was generally sound, with everyone sticking to their task.
Just before the half time whistle Connan Bonsor found space on the right hand side and crossed the ball perfectly to the far post for Curtis Breeze who swept the ball into the net.
In the second half Erdington came back into the game and the Coventry defence had to stand firm against some good attacks.
During the half several changes were made to give match time to our squad .This always affects team play while players settle in and our football became a bit ragged at times.
Erdington took advantage of this and deservedly equalised after a mix up in the Coventry defence.
Gradually, we put together some better football and created two or three good chances, managing to convert one of them just before the final whistle when Matthew Naylor latched on to a loose ball to beat the 'keeper from inside the box.
So, the League campaign has gotten off to an encouraging start , but there will be many more tests to come and we will need to improve quickly to move forward.
It was very encouraging to see so many people supporting the boys and thanks to all of our parents for providing the excellent post-match buffet which was much appreciated by us and the Erdington management, supporters and players.
At this age-group, there are not too many fixtures and I know the 15th of November seems a long time to wait for our next game, particularly for the players who were on standby this week. I will be trying my best to arrange a challenge match in the interim and will keep you all informed.
